Here are some tips take care of your lawn as it starts to get colder and the leaves start falling:
MOW AND MAINTAIN Keep mowing and cleaning your lawn through the fall. A big mistake many people make is to stop maintaining their lawn once the growth slows down. Yes, it is good to mow it less often if its not growing as fast but leaves are falling all through the fall and not just at the very end. As the leaves fall, they tend to blow into piles on your lawn and will block the sun. This is one of the main reasons that lawns come back with dead spots in the spring. If your lawn continues to get mowed throughout the fall, the mower will pick up and mulch those leaves that are falling. Not only will it not cause dead spots but it will also create organic fertilizer tat will break down faster over the winter and feed the lawn. Its a natural "time -release" fertilizer.
AERATE During the fall, your grass is actually at its strongest. It no longer has to deal with intense heat and the cold season hasn't started yet. This is why its a perfect time for aerating it. Over time, the upper layers of soil get compacted and it makes it difficult for the grass roots, nutrients(mulched leaves), air, and water to make its way down in the soil. Aerating will allow passage and break up the compaction.
FERTILIZE Just like how the local animals try to store up food to make it through the winter, plants need fuel for the winter as well. There are three key nutrients that plants and grass need. They are Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus. They all play key roles. Nitrogen helps plants green up and grow its foliage. Potassium promotes growth and general wellness of the plant. During the fall, the most important one is Phosphorus because it help create a deep root system which is essential to make it through the winter.

OVERSEED/REPAIR BARE SPOTS In order to have a lush lawn during the spring, it is essential to overseed and repair dead spots in the fall. This way the roots have time to establish in the fall so that it is ready to green up come spring. It is important to Fertilize when you seed in the fall so that the growth is hastened in time for winter and the roots establish before it gets too cold.
